In 2006, Family and Community Together (formerly Family Action Coalition Team) received a three-year Community Impact grant from United Way of the Columbia-Willamette to support families of children receiving early intervention/early childhood special education services (EI/ECSE) in family education and empowerment activities. This was a collaborative effort with the Multnomah Parent Action Committee, Multnomah Early Childhood Program, Oregon Technical Assistance Corporation, The Arc of Multnomah-Clackamas, The Inclusive Childcare Program, and Disability Compass.
By investing in the capacity, strength and expertise of parents of children with disabilities in partnership with professional staff, the Packet Project empowers families to stay healthy, raise resilient children, and maintain a high level of involvement in educational and social services, as well as supporting strength-based parenting approaches, connecting families to existing supports, and reducing the isolation of these families. True collaboration was created by placing families and family leadership at the heart of the activities, and utilizing multiple organizations’ professional staff to advise and support. Out of the foundation developed through the Multnomah Parent Action Committee (MPAC), activities were strengthened and expanded, with outreach to Washington and Clackamas County families.
